Stephanie Peabody was looking through security footage from her garage camera. She was trying to piece together what happened that night. What she found was a pleasant surprise.

One night Stephanie and her husband left their 3-year-old son, Bridger, at their house with his 78-year-old great-grandmother while they went out to dinner and a movie. Bridger called her Grammy.

After waving goodbye, Bridger and Grammy were walking hand-in-hand back to the house, and Grammy tripped and hit her head on a concrete step. She could not get up and was bleeding profusely. She searched her purse for her phone, but could not find it. Then, she realized she had left it in her car.

She tried to yell for help from neighbors. Little Bridger said, “Grammy, they don’t hear us.” Grammy said, “I don’t think anyone is home, so you are going to have to go get my phone out of the car. I know that is a frightful thing for you, but you can do it.”

It was dark, and there were no lights on the way back to the car. “I was a lot afraid,” little Bridger said. In the video, Bridger kept repeating three words Grammy had been reading him from Psalm 56:3 that says, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you, God.”

All the way to the car, Bridger kept repeating the words “Don’t Be Afraid.” He somehow managed to open the big car door. That in itself was an amazing feat for a little boy. It showed him finding Grammy’s phone. On the way back to Grammy with it, Stephanie kept hearing him repeating “Don’t be afraid” as he walked through the dark again.

Grammy managed to call Stephanie. As they rushed back, they called an ambulance. It got there about the same time they did. Grammy had a deep cut that required stitches but nothing worse. Bridger and his parents picked her up at the hospital the next morning.

Bridger sat next to his Grammy all the way back home. Grammy hugged him and told him she was proud of him for being so brave. He smiled and said, “I kept thinking of the Bible verse you read me, and I trusted in God to help me.”

Just like little Bridger did on that dark night, may all of us always remember to trust in God and don’t be afraid.
